Senate Moves To Investigate $18.5 Billion Abandoned Abuja Centenary City Project
The Senate has established a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate the reasons behind the delay in the $18.5 billion Abuja Centenary Economic City project, a decade after it began.
The committee was formed after Senator Ashiru Yisa, the Deputy Senate Leader, put forward a motion titled ‘Urgent need to revive and complete the stalled Centenary City Project, to realize its economic and development potential’.
Yisa, during his presentation, emphasized the significance of the Abuja Centenary Economic City project, which started in 2014 as a public-private partnership aimed at creating a modern city similar to Dubai in honour of Nigeria’s 100 years of amalgamation.
The committee’s responsibilities include reviewing the original public-private partnership agreement and suggesting any necessary changes to ensure a smooth and timely completion of the project.
Furthermore, the Senate has called on the Federal Government to prioritize the revival of the Centenary City project by offering the necessary support, resolving regulatory issues, and addressing any obstacles that have hindered progress over the past decade, considering its positive impact on the economy and the people of Nigeria.
