Liverpool Confirms Arne Slot As Jurgen Klopp’s Replacement
Liverpool officially announced on Monday that Arne Slot, the Feyenoord coach, will take over as the club’s head coach starting June 1, pending a work permit.
Although the length of his contract was not disclosed in the statement, Sky Sports reported that Slot had signed a three-year deal. His move to Liverpool has been widely anticipated, with reports suggesting that a compensation package of up to £9.4 million ($12 million) had been agreed upon.
Slot himself confirmed his upcoming role at Anfield during his final pre-match press conference with Feyenoord last Friday. Jurgen Klopp, who announced his departure in January, led his final game on Sunday, securing a 2-0 victory against Wolves.
In his farewell address to the Anfield supporters, Klopp called for full backing for Slot.
“You welcome the new manager like you welcomed me,” he said. “You go all-in from the first day. And you keep believing and you push the team.”
Arne Slot made the switch to Feyenoord in 2021 following a successful stint as manager at AZ Alkmaar.
In his debut season, he guided the Dutch powerhouse to the final of the inaugural Europa Conference League, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
Subsequently, Slot secured Feyenoord’s second league title in 24 years, leading to the extension of his contract for another three years.
“You can see people are genuinely sorry you are leaving,” he said on Friday.
“You can say that with words, but when you see it in people’s faces, it affects me quite a lot.”
Feyenoord had a successful season, clinching the Dutch Cup and finishing as runners-up to the dominant PSV Eindhoven team.
Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, praised Arne Slot’s attacking approach, stating that it aligns well with the club’s philosophy at Anfield.
Initially, Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen’s manager and former Liverpool player, was the frontrunner to replace Klopp at Anfield. However, Alonso decided to remain at Leverkusen after guiding them to their first-ever Bundesliga title.
In Klopp’s final season, Liverpool secured the League Cup and ended up in third place in the Premier League, securing a spot in the next season’s Champions League.
