The controversy surrounding Faithia Williams Balogun‘s new film, Efunroye: The Unicorn, has been addressed by the Nollywood filmmaker.
The actress announced the debut of her film, Efuronye: The Unicorn, on X on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. The official film poster she posted, captioned “Power, Trade, Legacy,” attracted the attention of online users.
She reshaped history and was more than just a fighter. Soon, “Efunroye: The Unicorn” will be available on your screens! “Are you prepared?” The post stated.
Given that the film is about Efunroye Osuntinubu, a Yoruba aristocrat, merchant, and slave trader who was born in 1805 in pre-colonial and colonial Nigeria, the post caused a great deal of controversy.
She supposedly had well over 360 personal slaves and utilized her contacts to build a prosperous trading network with European merchants in tobacco, salt, cotton, palm oil, coconut oil, weapons, and slaves.
Madam Tinubu had the power to affect political and economic decisions in her era since she was a wealthy woman. During the colonial era, she occasionally carried out commands typically given by political officials and maintained a sizable security force made up of slaves.
However, Fathia Williams addressed the issue around the movie on social media.
First of all, “Efunroye: The Unicorn” is not a marketing campaign meant to elevate or demonize a contentious historical figure such as Madam Efunroye Tinubu. It also has no political affiliation or intent.

Like any creative endeavor, it incorporates historical elements while also utilizing artistic license to enhance the narrative for contemporary viewers. I think we can explore significant aspects of our history with this movie, but it’s crucial to realize that it’s still a work of fiction based on true events,” she said.
