Skepta, a British-Nigerian rapper, won the public choice prize at the 13th African Film Festival (AFRIFF) for his film “Tribal Mark.”
At this year’s African Film Festival, British-Nigerian rapper Skepta made history by winning the coveted Audience Choice Award for his debut feature, Tribal Mark. The rapper’s artistic abilities and the influence his film had on viewers are demonstrated by the award, which was chosen by festival goers.
Music was only the start of the British rapper’s artistic endeavors. Skepta anticipated that Tribal Mark, which he co-directed with Dwight Okechukwu, his partner in the production business 1Plus1, would tackle significant social concerns related to immigrants, such as racial prejudice and mental health.
I can relate to other immigrant children from all around the world since I am also an immigrant’s child. And I can see how the trauma is wearing them down, or how they find it difficult to express certain things, you know? In May 2024, Skepta told Variety Magazine, “I just feel like this film is a nice bit of therapy for people who think or feel like me.”
The film, which was written by Andrew Prince Boateng, Sotonye Ogan, and Dwight Okechukwu, centers on Jude Carmichael’s character, younger Mark, who immigrated from Nigeria and finds it difficult to adjust to life in London.
Kola Banjo, Jude Carmichael, Camille Cole, Don Donald, Ciaran Duce, Divine Echeazu-Paul, Joseph Forman, Owen Hute, Dain King-Echeazu, Dasia King-Echeazu, Joshua Ojehonmon, Domas Okechukwu, Mark Oliver, Amelia Parillon, Afeni Prevost, Aayan Ibikunle Shoderu, Skeptt, Gabriel Kwasi Tedeku, Luis Timms, Tegasean Ubiebi, and Ay Urunning are among the film’s 90% minority ethnic cast.
Known as “a carefully told immigrant story,” On November 8, 2024, the Nigerian audience saw Tribal Mark at AFRIFF.
