Five Labour Party, PDP Lawmakers Join APC

As the plenary session reconvened at the House of Representatives on Thursday, four members of the Labour Party (LP) announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers involved are Esosa Iyawe from Edo, Tochukwu Okere from Imo, Donatus Matthew from Kaduna, and Bassey Akiba from Cross River.

Additionally, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu from Delta has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC.

The departing Labour Party members cited internal divisions within their party as the primary reason for their decision to switch allegiances.

It is worth noting that after more than two decades since its establishment, the Labour Party made significant progress in mainstream politics during the 2023 elections, securing six Senate seats and over 34 seats in the House of Representatives.

In stark contrast to its remarkable achievements in the 2023 elections, the LP failed to win any seats in the 2019 National Assembly elections.

Despite the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, finishing third in the polls, there were expectations that the Labour Party would emerge as a strong opposition alongside the PDP against the ruling APC.

However, internal conflicts following the general elections have hindered the party’s cohesion.
