ASUU Suspends Planned Industrial Action In Akwa Ibom
After some talks, the planned industrial action in Akwa Ibom State has been suspended by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
This decision was made following Governor Umo Eno’s intervention and address of some of the concerns raised by the academic union.
In a meeting held at Government House, Uyo, Governor Eno promised to address issues such as the 13th-month salary bonus, three months palliative, and the construction of strategic roads within the main campus at Ikot Akpaden.
The governor also urged the Labour leaders to collaborate with the government in providing democratic benefits to the people of Akwa Ibom State.
Governor Eno hailed the university, describing it as a source of pride for the State.
He urged the institution’s management to effectively utilize the revenue generated internally for various tasks. It was emphasized that the government would consistently provide the monthly subvention as required.
Comrade (Elder) Sunny James, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Labour Congres, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, along with Dr Inyang Udosen, the Chairperson of ASUU, AKSU chapter and other ASUU leaders, expressed their appreciation to the Governor for his supportive stance towards labour issues.
They also gave their assurance that the proposed strike would be cancelled.
“We thank the governor for being a labour-friendly governor and for promising to address some of the contending issues.
“We will no longer continue with our planned strike since the governor is willing to address a number of the contentious issues,” the statement noted.
