Customs intercept N48.5m cannabis, seize N220m contraband in Kaduna

The Nigeria Customs Service’s Federal Operations Unit Zone “B” in Kaduna reported that it had seized 185 blocks of cannabis sativa worth N48.5 million.

On behalf of the Comptroller, Chief Superintendent of Customs Saidu Nuruddeen, the unit’s public relations officer, made this announcement in a statement released in Kaduna on Thursday.

According to Nuruddeen, the seizure occurred on August 21 at around 3:30 a.m. and included additional contraband valued at N220.4 million that was found in several operations.

“Operators stopped a vehicle along the Zaria flyover on the Kaduna–Zaria Expressway and intercepted the contraband based on intelligence,” he stated.

He clarified that when nine sacks with 185 compressed blocks of Cannabis Sativa, weighing 89.6 kg, were found in the car, a male suspect was taken into custody.

The estimated duty-paid value of the seized material is N48,562,500.

“In keeping with the spirit of inter-agency collaboration, the suspect and the exhibits have been turned over to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency operatives for additional investigation and prosecution,” he stated.

The representative went on to say that three vehicles carrying illicit goods were also stopped by unit officers in a different operation.

456 bags of 50 kg foreign parboiled rice, 8,100 liters of Premium Motor Spirit, 178 bales of used clothing, 225 cartons of spaghetti, 107 used tires, and 37 pieces of electric shockers (tasers) are among the seizures, he claims.

According to him, the contraband’s total duty-paid value was N220,457,336.48.

Mr. Aliyu Alkali, the unit’s comptroller, praised Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the comptroller-general of customs, for his unwavering support and direction.

Alkali reaffirmed the unit’s dedication to continuing the war against illegal commerce, smuggling, and the importation of uncustomed products into the nation.
