Nigerian musician David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, stated that he voted for Kamala Harris in the most recent U.S. election because he wanted to be present for a historic event: the election of the first female president in his generation.
Davido expressed his passionate feelings about being there at a historic moment in American politics during an interview on The Morning Hustle podcast.
He said it would have been a historic accomplishment for his generation to have a female president.
Davido also stated that he appreciates the American political process, even if he voted for Harris.
He revealed that, following Donald Trump’s win, he congratulated him and emphasized the value of upholding the political process irrespective of individual inclinations.
I congratulated Donald Trump. That’s the president! What are you talking about? If I were running against him, I would still have congratulated him.
“What I like about America is that there’s true democracy. Where I come from [Nigeria], it’s not so.
“To be honest, I voted for Kamala Harris because I wanted to see the first female president in my generation. That would have been cool,” Davido said.
Davido talked about his political beliefs as well as the rising number of Nigerians giving birth overseas.
He clarified that for a lot of Nigerians, it’s a means of giving their kids greater chances, from better healthcare and education to foreign citizenship.
“Giving birth abroad is a common trend among Nigerians. Apart from having better [medical] facilities overseas, people want to have their kids abroad to save them the hassle of applying for visas,” he said.
