He is charged with maintaining unfavorable stereotypes about Nigerians, which are harmful enough as they are.
American comedian and actor Druski‘s recent skit depicting Nigerian actors as “African Scammers” has drawn criticism from Nigerians on social media.
In his act, ‘African scammers be having they best life,’ Druski depicted a con artist named Baba Oluwatosin using illicit methods to steal money from others. The Naira and other Nigerian ATM cards were also used in the video.
When the skit was uploaded to X on October 21, 2024, users had varying opinions about it.
Since then, he has been ordered to remove the post after being labeled as insensitive.
“We don’t find this trash skit funny,” a furious Nigerian remarked. “Please delete before morning, thank you.”
Daniel Regha, a social media star, also voiced his disapproval, writing, “This is extremely disrespectful; Nigerians are frequently called fraudsters based solely on our nationality, without any justification or evidence, and you are perpetuating the stereotype with this offensive stuff. This is the best you can say about us Nigerians, based on your entire stay in the country? Disgraceful.
“Druski, I love you and everything you do, but this isn’t it, brodie. You visited one of the largest countries in Africa and didn’t come up with any better content idea other than showing the world that there are “fraudsters” there. Meanwhile, Kai, Speed, and co. have been traveling to Asian countries where fraudsters are common, but they don’t do shit like this,” wrote another person. Try harder, broski.
Druski, Nigerians are not con artists. Another X user commented, “Please take down this skit so we don’t ruin our reputation worldwide.
“There’s already a terrible stereotype of Nigerians being scammers, doing this is only reinforcing that narrative and I don’t understand why anybody would find it funny,” a user on X tweeted.
Druski has not responded to the criticism as of the time of this story.
