FG Approves ₦77,000 Monthly Allowance For NYSC Members

The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly stipend for Corps Members by ₦77,000, effective from July 2024.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Caroline Embu, the official spokesperson for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), stated that this increase is in line with the enforcement of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

Embu pointed to a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, signed by the Chairman, Ekpo Nta.

Embu mentioned that prior to this decision, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, had visited the Chairman, during which time he expressed the need for a thorough welfare package for Corps Members.

“The NYSC Boss is thankful to the Federal Government for the timely gesture and is optimistic that it will not only bring much needed succour to the Corps Members, but also boost their morale and motivate them to do even more, in their service to the nation,” Embu said.

Before this increase, the monthly allowance for Corps Members was ₦33,000.

In 2020, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) increased the stipends for corps members from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000, several months after the implementation of a new minimum wage law set at ₦30,000.

By the end of July, President Bola Tinubu officially enacted the minimum wage law, bringing to a close a series of discussions involving government agencies, labor unions, and the private sector.

This action took place at the State House in Abuja, shortly after the National Assembly had ratified the Minimum Wage Act of 2019, which sought to raise the National Minimum Wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
