A major setback for Julius Abure as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declined to acknowledge the embattled politician as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
Despite this decision, it is worth noting that Abure’s name is listed on INEC’s website among the political party chairpersons.
This information is revealed in a counter-affidavit submitted to the Federal High Court in Abuja, addressing the Labour Party’s lawsuit that contests its exclusion from INEC’s refresher training for the submission of party agents in preparation for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.
In the document, INEC asserted that Abure’s term as National Chairman of the Labour Party concluded in June 2024.
Since June of this year, the Labour Party has been embroiled in a new leadership conflict following a congress in Anambra state that extended the tenure of the executive led by Julius Abure.
The results of this congress have faced scrutiny from various party members, including former deputy chairman Callistus Okafor, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and the 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, who recently convened a national congress in an effort to address the ongoing dispute.
