Mia Le Roux, the newly crowned Miss South Africa 2024, has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Miss Universe competition due to health concerns.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Miss South Africa Organisation, Le Roux conveyed her heartfelt appreciation for the support she has garnered from the South African public. She characterized her choice to step back as “incredibly challenging” yet essential for prioritizing her health.
“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe. Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me.
“However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength,” she said.
The Miss South Africa Organisation also supported, emphasising Le Roux’s resilience and prioritising her health.
“Mia has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period,” the organisation stated.
“Her health and well-being are our utmost priority, and we stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health.”
Le Roux’s decision to withdraw occurs amid a tumultuous year for the Miss South Africa pageant.
It is worth noting that Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant with both Nigerian and South African roots, stepped back from the competition following significant criticism on social media regarding her nationality.
At 23 years old, Adetshina was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican heritage.
The situation escalated when the South African Home Affairs Ministry initiated an investigation, uncovering claims that her mother might have engaged in identity theft.
In response to the controversy, Adetshina was invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, which she ultimately won.
Subsequently, Le Roux, who is a descendant of Dutch settlers known as Boers, was crowned Miss South Africa 2024.
