Oluwo Of Iwo Sends Message To FG Over State Policing
The Oluwo of Iwo land, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has expressed his concerns regarding the federal government of Nigeria’s plan to establish state police.
Oba Akanbi emphasized that this move could potentially lead to abuse of power by autocratic governors and disrupt the existing collaboration among state authorities.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Alli Ibraheem, and made available to newsmen on Monday, Oluwo also highlighted the grave consequences of state policing, including the possibility of state actors disregarding federal government authorities and sparking a civil war.
He cautioned President Bola Tinubu against endorsing such a proposal, as it could undermine the exclusive legislative power of the federal government in matters of security.
Instead, the monarch advised President Tinubu to focus on recruiting more police officers and enhancing the welfare benefits for Nigerian Police personnel.
He said, “Policing is on the exclusive legislative list of the federal government. Creating a state police will destabilize the existing tranquility and cooperation existing between and among the Nigerian states’ authorities.
“Most state authorities are known for flouting the order of the federal government. Exclusive affairs will be abused by governors with autocratic tendencies. Nigeria is not ripe for state policing.
“I implore the federal government to recruit more police personnel and improve their welfare package.
This, if done, will fortify the Nigerian Police Force and bring sanity to policing.”
