A prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has called upon President Bola Tinubu to lower the petrol pump price to N300 per litre.
George expressed optimism that Tinubu can bear the cost, suggesting that this reduction should begin in mid-December and continue until the end of January.
The former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP emphasized that such a measure would allow Nigerians to enjoy the festive season.
During a press conference held in Lagos on Wednesday, George stated that it is time for Tinubu to reciprocate the support of the Nigerian people.
George said: “There are two months in any calendar year that are very important months. Whether you are a Christian, a Muslim, an atheist, or a traditionalist, it is common and it is all over the world.
“The months of December and January are the most important months.
“From the middle of December, at least to the end of January, the cost of petrol should be reduced to N300 per litre. The government can absorb the losses.”
The PDP leader remarked that the adoption of such initiatives would bring joy to Nigerians during this season.
George stated that if the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, is able to donate N1 billion to a university, she should also consider contributing to cover the expenses.
He added, “With this, you will be sending many messages of happiness across the tribes and homes. Everybody in Nigeria will be happy because it will positively impact this period of the year.
“It is a challenge and he can do it. If Madam First Lady could donate N1 billion to a university, she could also donate into the coffers to bear this cost. What’s wrong? So that everybody will be able to sleep well with N300 per litre across the board.
“So by the end of January, in the meantime, the prayers, the happiness, the impact of that will drive people up. And the Almighty God will answer our prayers. We need in this December and January to put a smile on the faces of people.”
Recent statements from Nigeria’s petroleum marketers suggest that fuel prices could potentially decrease to between N900 and N1000 per litre during the upcoming Yuletide season.
Billy Gillis-Harry, President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association (PETROAN), and Chinedu Ukadike, Spokesperson for the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, shared this information in separate interviews with DAILY POST on Monday.
