President Bola Tinubu has mandated that the nation’s national flag be flown at half-mast across Nigeria.
This directive was issued in reflection of the nation’s mourning following the passing of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who succumbed to illness after a brief period of health.
The directive was confirmed in a statement signed and issued on his behalf on Wednesday through the office of Segun Imohiosen, the Director of the Information and Public Relations Office within the officer of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
Recall that Tinubu earlier today made an announcement regarding the demise of Lieutenant-General Lagbaja.
Confirming the directive to honour the late COAS, Imohinosen said: “The President has directed that National Flags be flown at half-mast throughout the country for seven days in honour of the departed Army Chief.”
He said that President Tinubu appreciated the services of the departed to the nation and wished the family the fortitude to bear the great loss.
Tinubu had also ordered rescheduling the Federal Executive Council meeting till another date to be announced.
This was made known in a statement released on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Initially scheduled for today, the council meeting was postponed in honour of Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, who passed away on Tuesday night.
General Lagbaja served as the Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, till his death on November 5, 2024.
