You Don’t Deserve That – Sports Minister Encourages Alex Iwobi

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Sen John Enoh, has offered words of encouragement to Alex Iwobi, the Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder, in the face of cyberbullying by certain individuals in the country.

Iwobi has faced a series of criticism for his performance during the recently concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote D’Ivoire.

Some citizens who believed that the 27-year-old had nothing to contribute to the national team, advised Iwobi to no longer represent the Super Eagles and urged him to immediately retire from football.

Consequently, Iwobi has decided to take a break from social media as he found it difficult to deal with the cyberbullying from disgruntled fans across the country.

In a viral video, Iwobi shared his thoughts with Enoh, who reassured him that it was only a small fraction of Nigerians who attacked him on social media.

Enoh assured Iwobi that the entire nation stands firmly behind him and is proud of his achievements at the tournament.

“I’m aware of something that is going on social media,” Enoh told Iwobi.

But Iwobi replied, “For me, I’ve taken myself off social media. I’m not aware of those things, after the departure of yesterday’s game.”

The Minister further said, “As a ministry, it is not the first time we experience this kind of bullying and that is not just you but other sportsmen or sportswomen are exposed to because of the outcome of..

“We are very concerned about how our sportsmen are treated, and I saw what Ahmed Musa wrote, and all of you (as support) you don’t deserve that (cyberbullying).

“We are very proud of you, and I believe the rest of the country is (proud of you as well). Those who are not are part of the minority. And that is why Mr President himself will receive some of you. Thank you for your great work. Just be strong.”
