Olubadan Of Ibadanland, Oba Mohood Balogun Is Dead

The 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Dr. Mohood Balogun, CFR, Alli Okunmade II, has died.

Reports revealed that the Yoruba monarch passed away peacefully at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, after a brief illness, just 72 hours after celebrating his second year on the

throne at Age 81, the late monarch was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday morning after experiencing a slight malaria fever.

The announcement of his passing was made by his younger brother, Dr. Sen. Kola Balogun, the Baba-Kekere Olubadan, through a press statement released to journalists in Ibadan by the Personal

Assistant (Media) to the late monarch, Oladele Ogunsola.

Dr. Balogun stated that Oba Balogun’s burial would take place at his ancestral home in Aliiwo at 4.00 pm on Friday, following Islamic customs. He also mentioned that the State Governor, Engr.

Seyi Makinde had been informally informed but would receive formal notification in the morning.

The late Olubadan was the first and most educated individual to become the Ibadan monarch. He held a PhD from a British university and previously worked as a university lecturer

and in a managerial position at Shell British Petroleum. Additionally, he had been a gubernatorial candidate for the defunct Nigeria People’s Party (NPP), served as a Senator, and achieved

success as a businessman.

His most recent official engagement was the meeting of the Olubadan Advisory Council, which he chaired last Saturday. During this meeting, the decision to remove Mogaji Akinsola, Olawale

Oladoja from his position was made.

However, on Tuesday, he instructed Oba Hamidu Ajibade, the Ekerin Olubadan, to form a small committee to discuss the decision made on Friday regarding the position of the Ibadan Zone in the

proposed newly reconstituted Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The decision of the small committee was officially approved by the Olubadan Advisory Council on Thursday, during a meeting chaired by Otun Olubadan and attended by the former governor of

Oyo State, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja.

The decision was supposed to be presented to the late Oba Balogun for his signature on Friday morning, to meet the deadline for submission to the state Commissioner for Local

Government and Chieftaincy Matters later in the day.

The late Olubadan is survived by his wives, children, and grandchildren.
