‘I Am Not An Afrobeats Artiste’ – Wizkid Declares As He Announces New Album ‘Morayo’
Renowned Nigerian music sensation, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid, has made a significant announcement regarding his musical journey.
In a recent Instagram post, the artist unveiled his latest project, the ‘Morayo’ album, which holds a special place in his heart as it serves as a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Jane Dolapo
Balogun, who sadly passed away in August 2023.
With this upcoming album, Ayo Balogun assures his fans that it will deviate from the familiar Afrobeats genre, marking a new chapter in his musical evolution.
Despite gaining international recognition through his breakout hit, ‘Ojuelegba’, and captivating his loyal fanbase, Wizkid FC, with memorable tracks like “Hola at Your Boy” and “Pakurumo,” the
‘Essence’ singer challenges his listeners to remove him from their playlists if they anticipate the same style of music that defined his earlier career.
In a series of candid Instastory posts, Wizkid made his position clear, stating that he is not an Afrobeats artist.
The genre that once defined him no longer fits. “Album name: ‘Morayo’—the best I ever made,” Wizkid asserted.
“Don’t call me an Afrobeats artiste. I’m not Afro anything.”
Interestingly, Wizkid is not the sole Nigerian artist challenging genre boundaries. Burna Boy, another superstar, has also distanced himself from the Afrobeats label, opting for the term “Afro
fusion.”
Wizkid’s courageous decision has ignited fervent discussions on various social media platforms. Users of social media have defended Afrobeats while recognizing Wizkid’s right to progress.
While we anticipate the release of ‘Morayo,’ one thing remains certain: Wizkid has had a prosperous music career and still has supporters cheering him on as he transitions in his journey.
Whether you are a devoted Afrobeats enthusiast or a music lover with an open mind, let us put aside classifications and anticipate what Wizkid describes as “the best I ever made.”
