President Bola Tinubu officially appointed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun on Monday (today) as the 23rd permanent Chief Justice of Nigeria after her approval by the Senate on September 25, 2024.
On a Monday, Kekere-Ekun assumed the position and completed the oath-taking process at the Council Chamber within the State House, Abuja.
She will now lead the judiciary, replacing Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who stepped down on August 22, 2024, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The ceremony on Monday was attended by three of Kekere-Ekun’s predecessors, including the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
The event also saw the presence of Kekere-Ekun’s family and other Supreme Court justices.
Kekere-Ekun is now taking her oath of office for the second time within a span of five weeks.
On August 23, before her official confirmation by the Senate, Tinubu had sworn her in as the acting Chief Justice.
