The death of businessman Ifesinachi Onyekere, popularly known as “fish magnet,” has been denounced by the Anambra State Government, which called the crime “dastardly and heart-wrenching.”
In a late-night attack on Saturday, July 26, Onyekere, the son of the Woman Leader of the Anambra State All Progressives Grand Alliance, was kidnapped and killed by gunmen at his home in the Ezinifite village, Okpuno, Awka South LGA of Anambra State.
Law Mefor, the state commissioner for information, expressed sympathy for the family of the deceased in a press release issued on Sunday. He assured them that the state government is working to find justice while maintaining and enhancing security in the state.
Mefor, who insisted that the new security architecture of the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo government is insulted by this incident, also expressed satisfaction that the police are pursuing the offenders.
According to the statement, the commissioner was cited as saying this during a condolence visit to Esther Onyekesi, the Woman Leader of the Anambra State APGA.
A portion of the statement said, “Dr. Law Mefor, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, recently visited Mrs. Esther Onyekesi, the Woman Leader of the Anambra State All Progressives Grand Alliance, to offer condolences. Her only son, Martin Ifesinachi Onyekesi, a well-known fish dealer in the state who goes by the nickname Fish Magnet, was recently abducted and killed in Anambra State.
Mefor expressed sympathy for the deceased’s mother and assured her that the state government is with her in her quest for justice while maintaining and bolstering security in Anambra State. He called the fish dealer’s death “dark and heartbreaking.”
He insisted that the death was an insult to the new security framework of the Solution Government and said he was happy that the police were pursuing the criminals and had released a statement after finding the car they used to drive him away. He also said that no one in Anambra State could carry out such a heinous act and escape punishment.
May he rest in peace, then. We’ll fight for justice for him.
Justice will be served for the mother, the family, and Anambra.
“It’s a very painful loss for all of us, and since it’s an insult to the new security architecture implemented by the ‘Solution Government,’ led by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the government is always challenged when things like this happen.”
According to the commissioner, since Soludo introduced a new security architecture on February 18, 2025, security in Anambra has greatly improved.
The government’s security forces, Agunechemba and Operation Udo Ga-Achi, must now deal with anyone causing disruption, he said, adding that difficult areas are finally getting the attention they need.
According to the statement, “whoever is posing a security threat in Anambra now understands that they have to deal with the government’s new security forces, Agunechemba and Operation Udo Ga-Achi.”
