The attack on one of its members, Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626), in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, has been denounced by the National Youth Service Corps NYSC .
In a statement signed by the management and released on Tuesday, the organization called the situation intolerable and reiterated its dedication to the safety and well-being of corps members across the country.
The statement said, “Management would not tolerate any individual or group undermining the safety of Corps Members for any reason and wishes to reiterate its strong commitment to their welfare and security nationwide.”
It conveyed shock at the attack, emphasized the need for justice, and called on security services and host communities to work together to provide a secure environment for corps members.
It further stated that “the public is enjoined to provide adequate security for Corps Members in their host communities and places of primary assignment.”
Preliminary investigations, according to the NYSC, showed that members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group had broken into a Corps Lodge in Oba and claimed the space was being used for illegal purposes. The NYSC stated that the claim was unsupported.
Corps Member Jennifer, who was merely visiting the lodge, was physically beaten by the agents when they ordered all residents to submit to a search.
“Since then, the police have been formally notified of the situation, and investigations are still underway to make sure the offenders are held accountable,” the statement continued.
The administration reaffirmed that it will not put up with any harassment, abuse, or intimidation of corps members.
In order to provide a safe and supportive atmosphere for national service, it also urged host communities and the general public to protect corps members, especially at their homes and locations of primary assignment.
