As world leaders work to put an end to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day. According to a report by Canadian broadcaster CBC, Carney was invited to Kyiv as a “special guest” to mark the occasion.
“On this Ukrainian Independence Day, and at this critical moment in their nation’s history, Canada is stepping up our support and our efforts towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” Carney wrote on X as he landed in the capital.
His trip to the war-torn nation coincided with Moscow’s announcement on Saturday that it had captured two villages in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, as Russian forces continue to make modest advances in the waning three-year struggle.
Carney’s visit coincides with dwindling chances for a summit between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, a solution that US President Donald Trump has pushed as part of his war-ending initiatives.
Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, most recently joined the clamor demanding that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, meet.
