On Monday, September 1, 2025, the US Consulate General in Lagos and the US Embassy in Abuja will be closed in honour of the US Labour Day holiday.
On Sunday morning, the US Mission made this announcement on its X account.
“On Monday, September 1, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed in observance of the U.S. Labour Day,” the statement stated.
The shutdown, according to the Mission, was a celebration of American workers’ achievements, a custom that began in 1882 when Matthew Maguire first suggested the holiday.
Regular consular services will resume following the vacation, however emergency contact channels will continue to provide access to necessary services.
Nigerians are encouraged to schedule their trips appropriately if they are looking for US visas or consular support.
US Labour Day is a federal holiday in the US that is celebrated on the first Monday in September.
