Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, stated Wednesday that African nations have the potential to gain from effective transformative leadership.
Obasanjo underlined the significance of transformative leadership for the advancement and development of the African continent when speaking on the visit of Dr. Greg Mills, a fellow at the University of Navarra.
Mills made this statement at the Executive Syndicate Class for Top CEOs, which was hosted at the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute, OOLI, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Mills served as the National Director of the South Africa Institute of International Affairs from 1994 to 2005.
“Africa needs leaders who are committed to the infrastructure, human, and capital development of Africa,” stated the former president, who also serves as the founder and chairman of OOLI’s governing board.
In order to illustrate how leadership qualities work, Dr. Mills used insights from his well-known book “The Essence of Success” and other works.
Effective management skills do not equate to visionary leadership, according to Mills. Leaders need to inspire groups, set a clear direction, implement audacious initiatives, and avoid becoming sidetracked by popularity or power. Strategic and tactical activities are different for true leaders.
“They exhibit conviction, courage, communication, and compassion through their vision and energy at one moment, while at another they are patient, prepared, and passionate.”
