Tinubu: State Police is a must to combat banditry

Tinubu Receives German President Steinmeier In Abuja

As part of initiatives to improve security around the nation, President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that the creation of state police is inevitable.

Tinubu stated that the federal government is dedicated to addressing insecurity head-on while speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by a group of notable Katsina natives led by Governor Dikko Radda.

The president revealed that cutting-edge military hardware and monitoring technologies would be used in Katsina State, where banditry has increased, and instructed security services to review their activities there. Plans to increase the capability of recently hired forest guards in the state were also disclosed by him.

Although the nation has significant security concerns, Tinubu emphasized that these may be overcome with strategy and will.

“We can overcome the security obstacles we are currently facing. Indeed, our borders are porous. We were born with flaws that could have been fixed sooner. We have a problem that needs to be solved, and we are working on it,” he stated.

“I have instructed all security agencies to further energize and examine the strategies as of today. We have given our approval for the additional drone purchase.

Additionally, the president directed that he get daily information on Katsina security operations.

“I have to establish state police; I am examining every facet of security. We’re taking a comprehensive approach to that,” he continued.

“Insecurity will be defeated. Our children, our people, our means of subsistence, our places of worship, and our recreational areas must all be protected. We cannot be intimidated by them.

Tinubu reminded the group that a committee was established by the federal government in February 2024 to examine the state policing system. Vice-President Kashim Shettima stated that although 20 states had not yet submitted their findings as of March, the project has subsequently garnered widespread support.

In addition, the president honored previous President Muhammadu Buhari and promised to uphold his legacy.

“We are all grieving the loss of our brother, President Buhari. Although it is God Almighty’s will, he has departed in a positive manner, he stated.

“He didn’t hand over a defeated country, a battered political structure, but a legacy of success, and that is the most important thing.”

Governor Radda extended gratitude to Tinubu for his continued support.

“Mr. President, I want to express my gratitude to you and let our elders know that I have never approached the President with a request that he denied,” Radda added.

Ibrahim Ida, the Wazirin of Katsina, and former Governor Aminu Masari were among the other speakers who praised Tinubu for paying tribute to Buhari and funding state development projects.

However, Ida encouraged the federal government to step up security in southern Katsina and give priority to upgrading the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport.
