Nigerian Troops Nab Notorious IPOB Commander, Rescue Kidnap Victims

Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, commonly known as “Gentle de Yahoo,” is a notorious commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). According to sources, the feared kingpin, who had terrorised communities throughout Okigwe and neighbouring areas for years, was apprehended during a coordinated intelligence-driven operation at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State.

“The successful operation was executed by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, working closely with sister security services and other law enforcement agencies. During the raid, troops seized a cache of weapons and other items linked to the group’s violent activities.”

“Among the recovered items are a German flag, which the terror group reportedly uses as a symbol, six cell phones, one cartridge, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and an English-made pistol.”

Additionally, the forces disrupted a significant criminal organisation in the area by discovering a workshop that disassembles stolen vehicles for resale. To stop them from being used in illegal activities, ten motorcycles that were discovered at the scene were burned.

After months of attacks, kidnappings, and extortion allegedly carried out by Gentle de Yahoo and his gang, military sources characterised the capture as a “major relief for residents” of Imo State.

This arrest serves as a stark reminder that no criminal, no matter how well-known, can continue to evade punishment. “Imo residents can now breathe easier,” the insider continued.

The operation has been praised by Okigwe and other residents as a major step in bringing peace back to the South East. Many people were hopeful that the fugitive’s apprehension would lessen violent attacks in the neighbourhood.

While applauding the troops, community leaders asked authorities to keep up the progress by eliminating any residual criminal cells and enhancing interagency intelligence sharing.

Nationwide Counter-Terrorism Successes

Targeting terrorists, violent extremist organisations, armed robbers, and kidnappers, the Army’s operation in Imo State was a component of a larger national effort.

Five abducted victims in Adamawa State were securely reunited with their families after being rescued by troops in the Madagali Local Government Area.

Two victims were rescued in Lokoja, Kogi State, and five people were released in Katsina State at Kukasheka Ward in Malumfashi Local Government Area.

Soldiers killed two terrorists and retrieved a motorbike, ammunition and an AK-47 weapon in another Katsina operation.

Benue State One violent extremist was killed, and many charms and a cell phone were found.

Eleven people were taken into custody in Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna States on charges ranging from terrorism financing to armed robbery and gun running.

Forty animals that had been stolen were found by troops in Plateau State and immediately given back to their owners.

Military leaders have commended the bravery of the participating troops and promised to keep up the pressure on criminal organisations until a permanent peace is established throughout the nation.

These victories are a result of our redoubled efforts to eradicate criminals from every area of this nation. Until peace is restored completely, we will not give up,” a senior Army official declared.

“Security forces fighting separatist militias in the South East have successfully arrested Gentle de Yahoo, and communities throughout Imo State and beyond now look forward to a future free from violence and fear.”
