JUST IN: Tinubu’s Govt Begins Payment Of Wage Award For November
The Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of the November 2023 wage award, several federal civil servants confirmed this to journalists on Tuesday.
The payment of wage awards to Nigerian workers was part of the agreement reached between organized labour and the Federal Government to help alleviate the impact of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol or fuel.
Despite the initial suspension of the wage award payment by the government, which drew criticism from activists and stakeholders, reports emerged that the government had reduced the wage award allocation by N100bn in the 2023 supplementary budget.
The Nigeria Labour Congress condemned the government’s actions as dishonourable, while the Trade Union Congress warned of potential industrial action if civil servants were not paid the wage awards.
However, a senior civil servant who addressed The PUNCH on condition of anonymity revealed that some civil servants have begun to receive the wage award for November 2023.
“Payment came in this morning, others have also confirmed receipt in my agency,” the source reportedly said.
A different senior government official at a Federal Government school near Abuja also verified the news, stating, “Indeed, the wage award for November 2023 has been disbursed.”
Following a deadline set by the organized labour, Minister of State for Labor, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, emphasized that the government will once more initiate the disbursement of the wage awards.
