Tinubu Has Rights Under Law To Hire, Fire – Senators React To Removal Of FCCPC Boss
The Senate announced on Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu is within his rights under the Nigeria Labour Law to dismiss any Chief Executive Officer of government agencies, including Barr. Irukera of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
This declaration was made following a motion put forward by Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, highlighting violations of the FCCPC’s regulations.
Senator Opeyemi, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District and serving as the Leader of the 10th Senate, called upon the Senate to investigate the removal of the Chief Executive and Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC in order to reinstate him.
“That the Senate do consider the request of President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the removal of the CEO of FCCPC,” the lawmaker stated.
Following remarks from certain legislators during the discussion, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the President possesses the authority, as outlined in the Nigeria Labour Law, to appoint and dismiss employees.
“Appointments of public officers are done under the Labour Law and you cannot force a willing servant on an unwilling master,” Akpabio said.
The motion was thrown out following its rejection through voice votes.
