Showmax has released the trailer for its new Nigerian Original series, “Kabiyesi,” which will premiere on February 14th.
This epic drama tells a story of tradition, ambition, and a princess’s fight for power amidst political change. The series is inspired by the true story of Orompoto, the only female Alaafin of Oyo, who reigned in the 16th century.
The story centers on Princess Aderiyife of Oyo-Ile, King Adegoke’s only daughter, who is betrothed to Prince Obabamiji of Igboho. Her path to destiny is disrupted by betrayal and tragedy, forcing her to confront the dangers of power.
Aderiyife must make difficult choices to protect her family and Oyo-Ile, navigating enemies both within and outside the kingdom. She is compelled to exceed the expectations of a princess and become the leader Oyo-Ile desperately needs.
Seyi Babatope, the show runner, expressed his excitement about “Kabiyesi,” stating that creating the series has been a rewarding experience.
He emphasized that the story explores themes of ambition, love, and the personal sacrifices required of leadership, not just royalty. He believes the series offers a unique narrative and celebrates African storytelling, and he looks forward to audiences experiencing it.
The cast includes Annetta Adebusuyi as Princess Aderiyife, Akin Lewis as Oba Adegoke, Amokun Ibrahim as Prince Obabamiji, and Patrick Diabuah as Bashorun. Oluwakemi Oladeojo plays Queen Adelewa, and Olajide Ibitoye portrays Adetoro.
Other actors include Olanrewaju Ayanwale, Jibola Dabo, and Hauwa Angela Issa. “Kabiyesi” will take viewers on a journey of love, sacrifice, and ambition as Princess Aderiyife struggles to protect her people.
