Borno Gov’t Frees 500 Suspected Terrorists
Borno State government led by Governor Babagana Zulum has recently discharged and cleared 500 suspects who were previously detained at Giwa Barracks for their alleged involvement in terrorism.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, revealed this in Maiduguri, the state capital while reiterating that the government is working closely with the military to ensure justice and fairness to all suspects.
This announcement came in response to the concerns raised by Hajja Gana, a leader representing a group of aggrieved women in Borno, who claimed that innocent men and children were being held at the barracks.
During a question and answer session at a Public Presentation of Charters of Demand from Survivors, Victims, and De-radicalized Women in Borno, organized by the local NGO Allamin Foundation for Peace and Development, Gambo confirmed that the released individuals were handed over to the Borno Government in separate batches.
“The latest batch released last week were 28 in number,” Gambo said.
The commissioner commended the foundation for its commitment to advocating for justice for the vulnerable and fostering peace and reconciliation in the state.
She emphasized that the government would carefully consider the demands put forth by the survivors and victims of the insurgency, noting that several of these demands were already being addressed through the implementation of the “Borno Model” after the surrender of insurgents and their families.
The commissioner explained that the “Borno Model” was a collaborative approach that involved all stakeholders within the community.
