BREAKING: Abuja Court Strikes Out Treasonable Felony Charge Against Sowore
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has thrown out the treasonable felony charges against Omoyele Sowore, a renowned activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last election.
The Federal Government had submitted a notice of discontinuance through the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, just last week.
The notice read, “By virtue of the power conferred on me under Section 174 (1) (c} of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, Section 107 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN intend to discontinue charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/235/2019″.
During today’s court session, Justice Nwite made the decision to dismiss the treasonable felony charge against the organizer of the #RevolutionNow demonstration.
The judge emphasized that the case needed to begin anew under his jurisdiction, leading to the charges being dropped.
Additionally, the Federal High Court in Abuja directed the Department for State Services (DSS) to return three phones, a passport, N10,000, and a phone belonging to the second defendant that were confiscated from Sowore.
It is worth noting that Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, were brought before the court in 2019 following their involvement in the “Revolution Now” protest in Abuja.
