This year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, has been marked with a public holiday designated by the Federal Government on Friday, September 5, 2025.
On behalf of Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the statement was released on Wednesday by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior.
In addition to congratulating Muslims nationwide and abroad on the event, the government encouraged them to follow the Prophet’s example of compassion, humility, love, peace, and tolerance.
The statement also asked Nigerians of all religions to use the event to pray for peace, security, and stability in the country, while supporting government’s efforts to enhance national unity and stimulate development.
“The Interior Minister wishes Muslims a happy and tranquil Eid-ul-Mawlid.
The statement went on to say, “The Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration gives us another chance to deepen the ties of fraternity, encourage harmonious coexistence, and embody the teachings of the Prophet regarding respect for one another and selfless service to humanity.”
The administration urged people to embrace its policies that encourage sustainable development and national unity while continuing to be law-abiding and security-conscious.
Celebrated during the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), Eid-ul-Mawlid honors the Prophet Muhammad’s birth. Prayers, talks, processions, and charitable deeds are all part of it.
Given Nigeria’s sizable Muslim population and longstanding custom of celebrating important Islamic holidays, the day is acknowledged as a national public holiday there.
Religious leaders and government representatives frequently use the holiday to advocate for peace and unity, especially during this time when Nigeria is still facing economic and security difficulties.
