Christian Leaders Raises Concern Over Politicisation Of Tax Reform Bills

Northern Christian Leaders have raised concerns over the prevalence of multiple and outdated taxation, which has significantly hindered Nigeria’s ability to attract foreign investments over the years, as potential investors are deterred from establishing their businesses in the country due to the existing tax framework.

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, observed this in his address on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Kaduna, which convened Christian leaders to discuss and formulate a stance on the tax reform bills proposed to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.

Dogara emphasized that Nigeria is in urgent need of new tax legislation to bolster the country’s business environment.

He expressed his endorsement of the proposed bill, highlighting that the current tax system has deprived Nigeria of substantial foreign investment opportunities.

Additionally, the former Speaker pointed out that the socio-economic challenges faced by the North cannot be attributed solely to external factors or the tax system.

The town hall meeting, themed “Church and Society: Tax Reform and Matters Arising,” was attended by Christian leaders from across the North, including bishops, pastors, and other clergy, as well as Mr. Sunday Dare, who was represented by former Kogi State Deputy Governor Simon Achuba, among others.
