Economic Hardship: Jos Prison Inmates Protest Over Food Ration

The Jos Correctional Center in Plateau State witnessed a protest on Friday as inmates expressed their discontent with the economic challenges facing the nation.
According to reports, the protest erupted following the news of reduced food portions provided at the correctional facility.

During the protest, the inmates reportedly defied orders from the custodial staff and skipped breakfast. It was also revealed that the inmates gathered at the center of the prison yard, raising their voices in protest.
Custodial officials intervened in the chaotic situation by dispersing the inmates with tear gas, compelling them to return to their cells.

Commenting on the event, the Comptroller of the Jos Correctional Center, Raphael Ibinuhi, acknowledged the incident and attributed the protest to the high cost of living.
He said, “The problem has to do with the high cost of goods in the market. The contractor in charge of the food said they are being forced by the price of food items to reduce the size of the plate of food.
“So, it is the food size that provoked the protest. I don’t think the protest is necessary because the food challenge and the cost of items is a national issues that the federal government is already addressing.
“And I want to believe that since it is a national issue, whatever step is taken by the federal government to address it will be felt everywhere in the country, including the Correctional centers.”
