As Nigeria celebrates its 65th anniversary of independence, Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has urged the populace to actively assist the government in promoting national development, emphasising that both the people and leaders must work together to achieve progress.
Speaking at an interdenominational church service on Sunday at the National Ecumenical Christian Centre in Abuja, Akume called for Nigerians to be unified and dedicated to creating a brighter future, calling government a “shared responsibility.”
His media assistant, Yomi Odunuga, signed a statement that said this.
According to the statement, dignitaries included senior government officials, representatives of the diplomatic community, and religious leaders attended the church service, which was one of the activities honouring Nigeria’s 65th anniversary of independence.
The ceremony included Thanksgiving prayers for national progress, peace, and unity, the statement added.
According to Akume, Independence Day signifies a resurgence of purpose rather than only commemorating the past.
The SGF emphasised the value of responsible leadership and emphasised the current administration’s dedication to openness and honesty.
“Under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, our nation is undergoing bold reforms aimed not at temporary relief but at lasting transformation,” the SGF stated in the statement.
Although he understood the difficulties that many Nigerians are now going through, he advised people to continue being patient and constructive when interacting with government initiatives.
“The problems we are currently facing have been there for decades.
However, this administration is committed to taking on them directly and providing long-lasting answers.
“The sacrifices being made by Nigerians today are paving the way for economic renewal, stronger institutions, and improved conditions across food, energy, healthcare, education, jobs, and infrastructure,” the statement continued, adding that these reforms may feel difficult at the present.
The SGF urged Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration’s reform agenda and called for national unity.
He said, “Our resilience is greater, but our challenges are real.”
Nigeria has long been known for its inventiveness and tenacity. Now is the time to revive our sense of patriotism, turn obstacles into possibilities, and go forward with action-based hope.
Nigeria celebrated the anniversary of its independence from British colonial authority on October 1, 1960, with parades, church and mosque services, and speeches by government representatives.
