As her nation presently holds the EU chair, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Saturday that Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu has turned into a “problem” and that she will attempt to exert pressure on Israel regarding the Gaza war.
In an interview with the daily Jyllands-Posten, Frederiksen declared that Netanyahu was now a problem in his own right and that the Israeli government was gone “too far.”
The latest settlement project in the occupied West Bank and the “utterly appalling and catastrophic” humanitarian situation in Gaza were denounced by the center-right leader.
She stated, “We are among the nations that wish to exert more pressure on Israel, but we have not yet secured the backing of EU members.”
In reference to trade or research sanctions, Frederiksen went on to say that she wished to take into account “political pressure, sanctions, whether against settlers, ministers, or even Israel as a whole.”
Nothing is being ruled out in advance. Frederiksen, whose nation is not among those that have declared their intention to recognize the Palestinian state, continued, “We are designing the sanctions to target where we believe they will have the greatest effect, just like with Russia.”
1,219 people, primarily civilians, were killed in the October 7, 2023, onslaught on Israel by the Hamas authorities of Gaza, according to an AFP count of official numbers.
According to data from Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, which the UN deems credible, Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed around 61,430 Palestinians, primarily civilians.
