Obi Lauds D’Tigress on Fifth Historic AfroBasket Win

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has received congratulations from Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and presidential contender for the Labour Party, after their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Championship.

Obi commended the team’s exceptional performance and tenacity in a statement on Monday headlined “MISSION V ACCOMPLISHED,” calling them “fearless, fast, and unstoppable.”

“You accomplished it, D’TIGRESS. Congratulations. You performed like real court queens. Once more, you have achieved history by winning the AfroBasket five times in a row, and you have made Africa and Nigeria proud,” Obi remarked.

Obi also conveyed his sincere gratitude to the players for their perseverance and hard work during the competition.

“We appreciate you giving us your all, putting your all into every match, and demonstrating to the world what Nigerian brilliance looks like. “Your skill on the court was outstanding,” he remarked.

Rena Wakama, the team’s coach, received particular praise from him for her part in guiding the squad to victory.

“And to Coach Wakama, thank you for your strategy, leadership, and faith in this team; you led them like a real champion maker,” Obi said.

After defeating Mali in the final, D’Tigress were declared the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket champions on Sunday.

At the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday, the team led by Rena Wakama won the championship.

Nigeria further solidified their supremacy on the continent with the victory, becoming the first nation to win five straight Women’s Afrobasket titles.

They have also gone eleven years without losing in the competition.
