Recently, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) mandated all bank customers to connect their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) to their bank accounts.

In a circular dated December 1st, 2023, the apex bank instructed banks to impose restrictions on all Tier 1 bank accounts lacking a BVN, a development that has raised concerns among citizens who had previously queued in their various banks to link their BVNs to their respective accounts.

Tier 1 accounts are those that require a valid identity or proof of address for opening. While some banks have set February 29, 2024, as the deadline, others have not specified any deadline.

Note that the National Identification Number (NIN) is an 11-digit number assigned randomly to individuals upon enrollment in the National Identity Database (NIDB).

The Bank Verification Number (BVN) utilizes biometric technology to provide a secure unique identifier for analyzing human characteristics, offering an enhanced form of authentication for real-time security procedures.

How To Link Your BVN or NIN To Your Bank Account:

Via SMS: Simply text BVN/NIN, your account number, and BVN/NIN number to the number/code provided by your service provider or bank.
