Top Russian general seriously wounded in Ukraine – Officials

Russian officials say a senior Russian officer has been gravely wounded on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Sergei Melikov, the leader of the Russian republic of Dagestan, stated that Lt.-Gen. Esedulla Abachev, a prominent commander in the Leningrad Military District, has been on the front line from the start of the conflict.

Melikov posted on Telegram on Monday, saying, “He has held several important commanding positions, but has always been at the very front, at the most responsible and therefore most dangerous sections of the front.”

He gave no other information about Abachev’s health.

He only stated that the 57-year-old was being treated in “one of the best military hospitals in the country.”

The Ukrainian military intelligence agency HUR reports that the general was injured in a HUR strike on a military column in the Kursk region of western Russia, necessitating the amputation of several of his limbs.

Since Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, at least 12 generals have been dead.

In 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the re-establishment of the Leningrad Military District, which now includes all of northwest Russia up to the Ural Mountains.

Its name alludes to St. Petersburg’s Soviet designation.
